Miller and Stephen Rollnick have added&nbsp;<em>compassion,&nbsp;<\/em>an inherent forth component of Motivational Interviewing (MI), to the original three constituents of this counseling approach of collaboration, evocation and autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Compassion<\/em>&nbsp;highlights the essence upon which MI is based. We believe that is it one of the qualities that drives health care professional to choose their professions \u2013it is our desire to help others that motivates us to pursue a career within this field. It is&nbsp;<em>compassion<\/em>&nbsp;that allows us to prioritize the well-being and needs of our clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The addition of compassion to the practice of MI sends a clear message: to conserve and continuously develop compassion is of the utmost importance. This serves as a reminder that our attitude, as health care professionals, can unquestionably help motivate our clients to make positive life changes and adopt behaviors that favor healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller, W.
